Thailand Angthong National Marine Park

Ang Thong  or ‘golden bowl’ in Thai, is the name given to a cluster of majestic islands within the National Maine Park designated a protectorate since 1980 .

This group of forty-two islands is situated off Koh Samui’s northwest coast and covers more than 100 square kilometers of land area and includes scenery of outstanding natural beauty, with awesome limestone cliffs, home to flocks of swallows, a labyrinth of caves and grottos to explore and charming white sandy beaches that inspired the novel “The Beach”

Wua Talap Island

Wua Talap Island is where the headquarters and visitor registration centre of the National Park is based. The island features a beautiful fine white sandy beach for sun bathers and warm tranquil crystal clear waters for swimming, snorkeling and kayaking. There is also an awesome viewpoint that can be reached via a meandering wooden stair case that leads to the tranquil location of the now famous Emerald Lake.

Also commonly known as the ‘Emerald Lake’, this is an awe inspiring inland lake completely surrounded by steep limestone cliffs, The lake is directly connected to the sea via a series of underwater caves and caverns. The surrounding limestone cliffs have been sculpted and shaped over time by weathering creating scenery of majestic and natural beauty. As the name implies the waters of the lake are a stunning emerald green in color and together with the surrounding cliffs interlaced with foliage combine to create scenery of unparallel splendor.

Thaiphlao  Wua Kantang and Samsao Islands

These are three of the most visited islands however with forty two islands to choose from all with private and uninhabited sandy beaches, turquoise warm waters and vibrant coral reefs; it would be advisable to plan several visits to fully soak in the serenity, peace and natural beauty of the area.

The most convenient but also the most expensive way to reach the Marine Park from Samui is to hire a private speed boat that departs from one of the North East Coast Beaches Bangrak, Bophut or Maenam. A less expensive alternative is to take a long tail boat from Samui’s main town of Nathon. Numerous companies offer day boat tours to the Marine Park that includes, food, soft drinks, fishing gear, snorkeling and kayaking.
